Soviet Troops at the Beginning of the 1942 Summer Campaign: National Formations in Battles in the Big Bend of the River Don

Abstract:
This article is dedicated to the participation of three national formations – the 110th Kalmyk Cavalry Division, the 115th Kabardino-Balkar Cavalry Division, and the 255th Independent Chechen-Ingush Cavalry Regiment – in the most dramatic events of the 1942 summer campaign associated with the Soviet troops' defense in the big bend of the River Don. Compared with most military formations within the Red Workers' and Peasants' Army which fought around this line, the national units were fresh and fully equipped with men, horses, and machinery. The national military formations put up a fierce resistance against the enemy. However, due to the latter’s overwhelming superiority in manpower, artillery, tanks, and aviation, they were overpowered by the enemy within days.

The Soviet Polity and the Church in 1940-1945 (Based on Materials from the “Krasnyi Sever” Newspaper)

Abstract:
In this article, the author makes an attempt to analyze changes in the state’s confessional policy in 1940-1945. Based on materials from Vologda’s regional newspaper “Krasnyi Sever”, the author conducts a comprehensive study of publications relating to religion, the faithful, religious associations, and atheist activities. While on the eve of the Great Patriotic War, antireligious activity had been given considerable attention, with its commencement this line of work pursued by the authorities and public organizations lost its topicality. After the “radical turning point” in the war's development, there emerged the period of softening the treatment of clergy, the faithful, and their communities, which lasted until the end of the 1940s.
